»nichtig«: Das seit dem 16. Jh. bezeugte, aus der Rechtssprache stammende Adjektiv, das heute vorwiegend noch in der Wendung »null und nichtig« gebraucht wird, ist aus lat. nullus »keiner« entlehnt (wohl < *n(e) oin(o)los »nicht ein Einziger«). Das Substantiv Null »Zahlzeichen für den Begriff des Nichts« hingegen wurde im 15. Jh. aus it. nulla (eigentlich »Nichts«, dann »Zahlzeichen für den Begriff des Nichts« nach arab. ṣifr, ↑ Ziffer) entlehnt. Es wird seit dem 18. Jh. auch übertragen im Sinne von »wertlose Sache, unbedeutende Person« verwendet. – Zus.: Nullpunkt »Gefrierpunkt beim Thermometer« (19. Jh.), auch übertragen im Sinne von »seelischer Tiefpunkt«. – Beachte in diesem Zusammenhang noch das abgeleitete Verb spätlat. annullare »zunichte machen« in ↑ annullieren.
